Meet the owner: Jack Batey

In the latest instalment of our "Meet the Owners" series, we had the privilege of sitting down with Jack Batey, a co-owner and integral driving force behind Showcase Creative. In our Q&A session, Jack shared valuable insights into his day-to-day responsibilities and the key role he plays in shaping the company's success. Beyond the business realm, we also learn what Jack likes to do in his spare time and what his pet cats are called! We hope you'll enjoy getting to know Jack Batey a little better!

What’s the most exciting part of your job?

I love seeing the end product after receiving the initial brief. Some of the influencer box requests we receive are interesting, to say the least. It is great figuring out how we can make it work, seeing the initial mock ups and following the manufacturing through our warehouse until we have a complete job. The best bit is seeing some of the projects popping up on social media.

What does your day to day look like?

Typically, my day involves working with our sales and estimating teams to conceptualize and price various projects. Personally, I deal with some of the more “out there” box briefs. I will work closely with the customer, our creative department and the production team to bring their projects to life.

Apart from that, I also participate in higher-level decision-making processes about the company's direction and potential investment opportunities with other directors.

What about Showcase Creative are you most proud of?

One of our most significant achievements recently was winning two Print Week awards. On a broader scale I am immensely proud of our team at Showcase. We often undertake complex projects that demand exceptional skills to manage and execute. Many of our team members joined with little or no industry experience. However, thanks to the guidance and training from seasoned staff, we now boast a highly skilled and flexible team. It is great to see what we can all do together.

What is the most challenging thing about running your business?

Keeping up with the constantly evolving market and economy is a daunting task. The past few years have been turbulent due to the global pandemic and significant economic shifts. Even in a normal environment we have to be agile and able to adapt but with these additional factors we have really had to keep our finger on the pulse.

What’s next for Showcase Creative?

We're focusing on expanding our capabilities for rigid boxes by investing in machinery and staff. We're also exploring possibilities to broaden our reach into other sectors of the packaging market.

Can you share a book or person who has greatly influenced your personal and professional life?

Robert Kiyosaki - Rich Dad Poor Dad is probably the book that has had the biggest impact. I haven’t managed to implement much of it but I’m working on it!

What’s your favourite thing to do in your spare time?

I enjoy going on adventures with my wife, Kat. Whether it is just cycling down the canal to a pub, going to a gig or going abroad on holiday, we always have the best time.

What’s the best place you’ve traveled to?

A few years ago we went to Japan for the Rugby World Cup. The food and experience in general was something else. I feel like we only scratched the surface. I would love to go back and explore some more.

Are you a coffee or tea person?

Coffee. I’ve recently turned into a bit of a coffee snob.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I’m actually quite good at making bad video games.

What is your favourite animal?

I’m a cat man

Do you have any pets?

We have 2 cats. Tyrion and Mike Tyson. They are incredibly friendly fellas.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Night owl.

If your life had a theme song, what would it be?

Safety Dance

What three items would you take with you to a deserted island?

My PC, a top notch satellite internet link and a well stocked fridge.
