Showcase visit to Biffa™ Waste Management Eastleigh

Sustainability is important to all of us at Showcase Creative, both as a business and as individuals. We wanted to visit a Waste management site to further educate and understand the processes involved in what happens to the waste in the UK. We reached out to our waste collection company Biffa, who kindly invited us to visit their Eastleigh site.

The visit was a huge eye opener on the sheer scale of logistics involved in waste management. It emphasised how important it is in the need for proper education in recycling and waste as a whole.

What happens to Showcase Creative Waste?

We create paper based products at Showcase creative but this doesn't always mean that our products are fully recyclable. We brought a couple of samples of our products to show what we do and whether the products are fully recyclable.

Laminating paper on one side is recyclable but the process is left with a waste product, the lamination that can not be reused. This laminate however, will not go to landfill but will be converted into energy.

Magnets, receivers, ribbons, foam and other non paper based materials that we sometimes use in our paper based products can not be recycled, but do not end up in landfill. The processes that break down paper based materials cannot break down different materials at the same time. The mixing of different materials is classified as contaminating.

We also brought along one of our eco 4 part and case boxes, that use unlaminated paper and our tuck flap that closes the box. This box also included our honeycomb board to hold items and also had a foiled logo on the case. These mono material boxes put a smile on the faces of the Biffa Employees as the whole product is one material, meaning it can be fully recycled and does not contain any contaminants.

Take homes

We are a company that divert our waste from landfill! As all of our waste is collected by Biffa, we know that none of our general waste will end up in landfill.

As a business and individuals we will be more conscious about what we will be placing in our bins. Removing magnets, receivers and ribbons from our boxes before we put them in the bin.

We can also advise customers to move towards the more eco friendly boxes, using mono materials. We can also inform, if foam is needed to not have this glued into the box, so it can be easily removed.

Some other waste Knowledge for home.

Please wash out plastic containers, cans etc before putting them in the recycling bin.

Please do not put batteries or electronics in your general waste.

Please try and remove plastic film from the rigid plastic containers before recycling.

We’re continually trying to reduce our impact on the environment. If you have any questions or suggestions on how we can improve our sustainable offering, please contact us on sales@showcasecreative.com
